Lessons From the Stalls: Visibility and Clarity

Yesterday, I finished using eBay, got up, and walked out to a local street fair – and was struck by how similar successful vendors on each were.  I suppose it shouldn’t be so surprising – after all, in both situations, success is all about visibility and message clarity.

What do I mean? Take a look at each venue. Look at signs (on eBay, listing titles / subtitles and graphics), position (on the website or physically on the street / row of vendors), and ease of perusal of their wares.

You’ll see immediately that people who are successful:

  • Make their messages simple – what they’re selling, benefit, cost
  • Make their wares visible – simple copy, photos, display
  • Make themselves accessible – positioned in the expected areas (clothing in clothing stalls) and in areas of high traffic (ends of rows, op of eBay listings, etc)

So what’s the lesson?

Be simple, be direct, be concise… and don’t be shy.
